Hinkley Point C Marine Tunnels

Tunnel Engineering’s Managing Director held a senior technical leadership role during the construction of the Hinkley Point C marine tunnels and their connections to the onshore and offshore shafts beneath the Bristol Channel.

The marine works included approximately 8.5 kilometres of segmentally lined intake and outfall tunnels, deep onshore shafts, offshore shafts, steel intake and outfall structures and complex sprayed-concrete-lined connections.

Responsibilities included:

  • Technical leadership of the tunnelling works
  • Management of tunnel design and construction interfaces
  • Assessment of segmental tunnel linings and connections
  • Integration of temporary and permanent works
  • Development and review of construction methodologies
  • Review of tunnel-to-shaft connection sequences
  • Technical assessment of complex underground works
  • Coordination between designers, construction teams and specialist subcontractors
  • Technical assurance and resolution of construction-stage engineering issues
  • Support during the installation and connection of offshore structures

The role involved managing complex engineering interfaces under significant groundwater pressure and ensuring that design requirements, temporary conditions and construction activities were properly coordinated.
